Private Cars Still Dominate the Type of Transportation for the 2023 Christmas Holidays and 2024 New Year

Unconsciously, the end of 2023 is around the corner, and our country’s national transportation will surge to face the Christmas and New Year holidays. Land, sea and air transportation will be full of homecoming travelers, as well as land route users – with the possibility of crossing the island using a ferry – with private vehicles or motorbikes.

Quoted from the Antara news agency, the Ministry of Transportation through the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) predicts that the potential for community movement during the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 holidays will reach 107.63 million people or 39.83 percent of the total national population.

This prediction was compiled from the results of a survey involving a number of parties, including the media, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo), academics, and transportation sector practitioners. There is also a method using distributing questionnaires online via WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS Blast. The survey period is one month, from 26 October to 2 November 2023.

“During the Christmas and New Year holidays last year it was predicted that 44.17 million people would move, while this year it was predicted that it would be 107.63 million people. “However, the results of this survey are not a substitute for actual data which reflects the actual situation,” said Ronny Kurniawan, Head of BKT Robby Kurniawan.

He explained that the results of the survey were the basis and input for preparing operational plans for the implementation of Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 transportation carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, ministries/institutions, and also other related parties.
