Overheating in a car can be a serious problem that can damage the engine if not treated immediately.
Although being stuck in traffic on the road is a common situation that can trigger overheating, most people still don’t fully understand the main cause behind this problem.
Quoted from the official MG website, let’s examine several factors that can cause a car to overheat and steps to prevent it.
1. Out of RadiatorCoolant
The most common cause of overheating is running out of radiator coolant fluid. Many vehicle owners realize too late the importance of checking and adding radiator fluid regularly. This fluid has a service life of around 20,000 km, but you need to remember to check it more often.
2. Cooling Fan Not Working
Damage to the cooling fan can result in insufficient air to cool the engine. A cooling fan that is damaged or installed upside down can be the cause of overheating. Perform regular checks to ensure the fan is functioning properly.
3. Radiator Damage
A damaged radiator, especially due to leaks in the hoses, can be a cause of overheating. The use of groundwater as a radiator filling fluid or a mismatch in the type of fluid can trigger leaks. A damaged radiator will inhibit coolant circulation, causing the engine to overheat.
4. Damaged Thermostat
A damaged thermostat can interfere with the cooling function by not allowing coolant flow according to engine temperature. If the thermostat fails, the cooling system cannot operate optimally, increasing the risk of overheating.
5. Clogged/Dirty Radiator
A radiator that is dirty or clogged with rust or dirt deposits can inhibit coolant circulation. This will cause the cooling system to work inefficiently, and the engine will become susceptible to overheating.
6. Low Quality Engine Oil
Improper selection of engine oil or low quality oil can increase the risk of overheating. Oil that is not heat resistant or tends to evaporate quickly can result in excessive friction and increased engine temperature.
7. Damage to the Water Pump
A damaged water pump in the cooling system can inhibit coolant flow. If the water pump is not functioning properly, the engine will not receive enough cooling, increasing the chance of overheating.
In situations of being stuck in traffic jams, especially in dense urban areas, vehicles are susceptible to overheating. To prevent this problem, vehicle owners are advised to carry out routine maintenance, including checking the radiator fluid, condition of the cooling fan and other components
