Hyundai and Kia had to recall 6.4 million vehicles due to the discovery of brake fluid leaks which could cause fires.
This car alliance from South Korea has actually been carrying out a recsll campaign since 2016 for problems with the antilock braking system or ABS and the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) which are produced by the same spare parts supplier.
Both car manufacturers say that brake fluid leaks can cause electrical short circuits which can result in fires.
Hyundai in September said it had reports of 21 fires and 21 other thermal incidents since 2017.
Kia, meanwhile, had reports of at least 10 confirmed fires and incidents.
Meanwhile, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that it opened an audit request to evaluate the timeliness of Hyundai and Kia’s defect decision-making, as well as compliance with reporting requirements.
Based on these findings, Hyundai said that it always places the safety of customers and employees as the main priority in everything it does.
Kia also admitted that it was ready to cooperate with NHTSA during the investigation process.
Previously, in September Hyundai and Kia had recalled 3.37 million vehicles in Uncle Sam’s country due to the risk of engine fires, and asked owners to park outside and away from the building until repairs were completed.
