Xi Jinping and Thai PM Vow Closer Ties, Raising Eyebrows in Washington

Posted on February 7, 2025August 8, 2025 by syauqi wiryahasana

In a meeting held in Beijing this Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra pledged to deepen the already robust relationship between their two nations. Framing the bond as a “millennia-old friendship,” Xi emphasized mutual respect and support, particularly in safeguarding national sovereignty and security – a recurring theme in China’s diplomatic engagements amidst a complex global landscape.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations, a milestone Xi highlighted as the “Golden Jubilee for China-Thailand Friendship.” He urged both sides to collaboratively build a “China-Thailand community with a shared future,” promising greater prosperity for both countries, the region, and the wider world. Xi stressed the need to solidify “strategic mutual trust” to navigate global uncertainties, underscoring China’s commitment to working with Thailand to align development strategies and expand mutually beneficial cooperation.

Key initiatives discussed included the flagship China-Thailand Railway project, aimed at realizing the broader vision of China-Laos-Thailand connectivity. Xi also advocated for deeper collaboration in burgeoning sectors like the digital economy and new energy vehicles, seeking to forge more resilient industrial and supply chains. Notably, he commended Thailand’s efforts to combat online gambling and telecom fraud, calling for strengthened law enforcement and judicial cooperation to ensure regional security and stability. Beyond economic and security matters, Xi emphasized cultural exchange and people-to-people connections to fortify the enduring friendship. He also voiced support for Thailand’s co-chairmanship of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) and welcomed Thailand as a BRICS partner country, signaling closer multilateral alignment.

While the meeting was portrayed in official statements as a celebration of deepening bilateral ties, observers in Washington are watching the burgeoning relationship with a more critical eye. The strengthening Sino-Thai partnership occurs against a backdrop of increasing US-China strategic competition in Southeast Asia. The US government, while publicly acknowledging Thailand as a long-standing ally, is likely to be concerned about the extent to which closer economic and political alignment with Beijing could impact Thailand’s foreign policy trajectory and its relationship with the United States.

“There’s a delicate balancing act at play,” commented a Washington-based policy analyst familiar with Southeast Asian affairs. “While Thailand, like many nations in the region, seeks to benefit from economic opportunities presented by China, the US will be keen to ensure this doesn’t translate into strategic dependence or a tilt away from established partnerships.”

The China-Thailand Railway, while offering significant infrastructure benefits to Thailand and enhancing regional connectivity, is also viewed with some apprehension in Washington. Analysts point to the project as a key component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, designed to expand Beijing’s economic and geopolitical influence across Asia and beyond. The US government is likely to be monitoring the project’s financing, construction, and long-term implications for regional power dynamics.

Furthermore, Xi’s emphasis on cooperation in the digital economy and new energy vehicles aligns with China’s broader technological ambitions. Washington is increasingly wary of China’s dominance in these sectors and will be scrutinizing any agreements between Beijing and Bangkok in these areas, particularly concerning data security and technology transfer.

Thailand’s role as a BRICS partner country also adds another layer of complexity. While not a full member, this association could signal a desire for closer alignment with a bloc of nations often seen as alternatives to the US-led international order.

In conclusion, while the official narrative surrounding the Xi-Paetongtarn meeting emphasizes friendship and mutual benefit, the developing relationship between China and Thailand is being closely monitored in Washington. The US government will be navigating a careful strategy of maintaining its alliance with Thailand while seeking to counterbalance China’s growing influence in this strategically vital Southeast Asian nation.
