PDI-P Returns to the Opposition: A Look Back and Forward

Posted on August 25, 2024August 8, 2025 by syauqi wiryahasana

The 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election has ushered in a new era for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), as they prepare to take on the role of opposition after a significant electoral defeat. This development prompts us to revisit the last time PDI-P found itself in this position: during the presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) from 2004 to 2009.

The 2004 election saw a victory for the Democratic Party and Golkar, with SBY and Jusuf Kalla securing the presidency over PDI-P’s candidates, Megawati Soekarno Putri and Hasyim Muzadi. This defeat marked the beginning of PDI-P’s role as a vocal and critical opposition force.

During their time as the opposition, PDI-P actively challenged the SBY administration’s policies, notably voicing strong disapproval of the appointment of ExxonMobil as the lead operator of the Cepu Block and the government’s decision to raise fuel prices. The party’s consistent advocacy against policies perceived as harmful to the public earned them widespread public appreciation and solidified their image as a strong voice for the people. This ultimately translated into increased public trust and support for PDI-P.

The 2024 election has once again seen PDI-P assume the mantle of the opposition, this time under a new administration led by Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka. The election results, based on quick count data, suggest a resounding victory for Prabowo-Gibran, with over 50% of the vote. The PDI-P candidate, Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD, fell short, securing only 16% of the vote.

The decision of PDI-P to become the opposition in the new administration has garnered support from various quarters, including political observers and the supporters of the Anies Baswedan-Cak Imin alliance. M. Isnur, the chair of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), has expressed concerns about a potential militaristic leadership under Prabowo-Gibran, highlighting the potential threat to the rule of law and democratic principles. He emphasizes the crucial role of a strong opposition force in holding the government accountable, monitoring public spending, and safeguarding democracy.

Megawati Soekarno Putri’s declaration of PDI-P’s opposition status reflects their commitment to fulfilling this vital role in Indonesian politics. With their history of effective opposition during the SBY era, PDI-P is well-positioned to once again act as a guardian of democracy, providing a crucial counterbalance to the ruling party and advocating for the interests of the people.

The future of Indonesian politics will be shaped by the dynamics between the new administration and the opposition, with PDI-P at the forefront. Their commitment to upholding democratic values, scrutinizing government actions, and advocating for the people’s interests will be critical in ensuring a balanced and accountable political landscape for the nation.
